[194] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Nāḷandā, in Pāvārika's Mango Grove. Then the householder (gahapati) Upāli approached the Blessed One … Sitting to one side, the householder Upāli said this to the Blessed One: "What now, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition, whereby some beings here do not attain final Nibbāna (parinibbāyanti) in this very life? And what, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition, whereby some beings here do attain final Nibbāna in this very life?" (This should be expanded in detail just as in the preceding sutta.) "This, householder, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby some beings here attain final Nibbāna in this very life."
