[195] On one occasion the Venerable Piṇḍolabhāradvāja was dwelling at Kosambī, in Ghosita's Park. Then King Udena approached the Venerable Piṇḍolabhāradvāja; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Piṇḍolabhāradvāja, and when the courteous and amiable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, King Udena said this to the Venerable Piṇḍolabhāradvāja: "Master Bhāradvāja, what is the cause, what is the reason, why these young bhikkhus—mere youths with jet-black hair, endowed with the blessing of youth, in the first stage of life, who have not dallied with sensual pleasures—practice the holy life (brahmacariya) complete and pure for as long as life lasts, and maintain it for the long course?"
"This has been said, great king, by the Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One: 'Come, bhikkhus, toward women old enough to be your mothers, set up a mind as toward a mother; toward women old enough to be your sisters, set up a mind as toward a sister; toward women old enough to be your daughters, set up a mind as toward a daughter.' This, great king, is the cause, this is the reason, why these young bhikkhus—mere youths with jet-black hair, endowed with the blessing of youth, in the first stage of life, who have not dallied with sensual pleasures—practice the holy life complete and pure for as long as life lasts, and maintain it for the long course."
