[210] On one occasion the Venerable Udāyi was dwelling at Kāmaṇḍā, in the mango grove of the brahmin Todeyya. Then a young brahmin student, a pupil of the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan, approached the Venerable Udāyi; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Udāyi, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down at one side. As that young brahmin sat at one side, the Venerable Udāyi instructed, exhorted, inspired, and gladdened him with a talk on the Dhamma. Then the young brahmin, having been instructed, exhorted, inspired, and gladdened by the Venerable Udāyi with a talk on the Dhamma, rose from his seat and approached the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan; having approached, he said this to the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan: "May the good lady know: the ascetic Udāyi teaches a Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end; he proclaims the holy life (brahmacariya) with its meaning and its phrasing, entirely complete and pure."
"Then, young man, in my name invite the ascetic Udāyi for tomorrow's meal."
"Yes, madam," that young brahmin replied to the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan, and he approached the Venerable Udāyi; having approached, he said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "May the worthy Udāyi please consent to accept tomorrow's meal from our teacher, the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan." The Venerable Udāyi consented by silence.
Then, when that night had passed, in the morning the Venerable Udāyi dressed, and taking bowl and robe, approached the residence of the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan; having approached, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Then the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan, with her own hand, served and satisfied the Venerable Udāyi with excellent hard and soft food. Then, when the Venerable Udāyi had finished eating and had withdrawn his hand from the bowl, the brahmin lady of the Verahañcāni clan put on her sandals, sat down on a high seat, covered her head, and said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "Speak the Dhamma, ascetic." Saying, "There will be an occasion, sister," he rose from his seat and departed.
