[243] Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One … Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said: 'one accomplished in the faculties (indriyasampanno), one accomplished in the faculties.' In what way, venerable sir, is one accomplished in the faculties?"
"If, bhikkhu, while dwelling contemplating arising and vanishing (udayabbaya) in the eye faculty (cakkhundriya), a bhikkhu becomes disenchanted with the eye faculty … If, bhikkhu, while dwelling contemplating arising and vanishing in the tongue faculty (jivhindriya), a bhikkhu becomes disenchanted with the tongue faculty … If, bhikkhu, while dwelling contemplating arising and vanishing in the mind faculty (manindriya), a bhikkhu becomes disenchanted with the mind faculty; being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate … there is the knowledge (ñāṇa): 'It is liberated.' He understands: 'Birth (jāti) is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being.' It is in this way, bhikkhu, that one is accomplished in the faculties."
