[244] Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One … Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said, 'a speaker of the Dhamma (dhammakathika), a speaker of the Dhamma.' In what way, venerable sir, is one a speaker of the Dhamma?" "Bhikkhus, if a bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma for the purpose of disenchantment (nibbidā) with the eye, for its fading away (virāga), for its cessation, he can fittingly be called 'a bhikkhu who is a speaker of the Dhamma.' If a bhikkhu is practising for disenchantment with the eye, for its fading away, for its cessation, he can fittingly be called 'a bhikkhu practising in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipanno).' If, through disenchantment with the eye, through its fading away, through its cessation, a bhikkhu is liberated by non-clinging (anupādā vimutto), he can fittingly be called 'a bhikkhu who has attained Nibbāna in this very life (diṭṭhadhammanibbānapatto).' … If a bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma for the purpose of disenchantment with the tongue, for its fading away, for its cessation, he can fittingly be called 'a bhikkhu who is a speaker of the Dhamma.' … If a bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma for the purpose of disenchantment with the mind (mano), for its fading away, for its cessation, he can fittingly be called 'a bhikkhu who is a speaker of the Dhamma.' If a bhikkhu is practising for disenchantment with the mind, for its fading away, for its cessation, he can fittingly be called 'a bhikkhu practising in accordance with the Dhamma.' If, through disenchantment with the mind, through its fading away, through its cessation, a bhikkhu is liberated by non-clinging, he can fittingly be called 'a bhikkhu who has attained Nibbāna in this very life.'"
