[302] Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said, 'a speaker on the Dhamma (dhammakathika), a speaker on the Dhamma.' In what way, venerable sir, is one a speaker on the Dhamma? In what way is one practicing in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipanna)? In what way has one attained Nibbāna in this very life (diṭṭhadhammanibbānappatta)?"
"Bhikkhu, if a bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma for the purpose of disenchantment (nibbidā) with form (rūpa), for its dispassion (virāga) and cessation (nirodha), that is enough for him to be called 'a bhikkhu who is a speaker on the Dhamma.' If a bhikkhu is practicing for disenchantment with form, for its dispassion and cessation, that is enough for him to be called 'a bhikkhu practicing in accordance with the Dhamma.' If, through disenchantment with form, through its dispassion and cessation, a bhikkhu is liberated by non-clinging (anupādā vimutta), that is enough for him to be called 'a bhikkhu who has attained Nibbāna in this very life.'
"If a bhikkhu … with regard to feeling (vedanā) … If a bhikkhu … with regard to perception … If a bhikkhu … with regard to volitional formations … If a bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma for the purpose of disenchantment with consciousness, for its dispassion and cessation, that is enough for him to be called 'a bhikkhu who is a speaker on the Dhamma.' If a bhikkhu is practicing for disenchantment with consciousness, for its dispassion and cessation, that is enough for him to be called 'a bhikkhu practicing in accordance with the Dhamma.' If, through disenchantment with consciousness, through its dispassion and cessation, a bhikkhu is liberated by non-clinging, that is enough for him to be called 'a bhikkhu who has attained Nibbāna in this very life.'"
