Mahākoṭṭhikasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Saḷāyatanavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 18 · Section 251

[251] Then the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhika approached the Blessed One … Sitting to one side, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhika said this to the Blessed One: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief, so that, having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone, withdrawn, heedful, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute." "Whatever, Koṭṭhika, is impermanent — there you should abandon desire (chanda). And what, Koṭṭhika, is impermanent? The eye, Koṭṭhika, is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Forms (rūpā) are impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Eye-consciousness is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Eye-contact (cakkhusamphassa) is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Whatever feeling (vedanā) arises with eye-contact as condition — whether pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant — that too is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. … "The tongue is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Tastes are impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Tongue-consciousness is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Tongue-contact is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Whatever feeling arises with tongue-contact as condition — whether pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant — that too is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. … "The mind (mano) is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Mental phenomena (dhammā) are impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Mind-consciousness is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Mind-contact is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition — whether pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant — that too is impermanent; there you should abandon desire. Whatever, Koṭṭhika, is impermanent — there you should abandon desire." The seventh.
