[346] Bhikkhus, suppose a man with wounded limbs, with festering limbs, were to enter a reed thicket (saravana), and thorns of kusa grass were to pierce his feet, and the reed leaves were to scratch his festering limbs. In this way, bhikkhus, that man would on that account experience suffering (dukkha) and grief to an even greater measure. In just the same way, bhikkhus, some bhikkhu here, whether gone to a village or gone to a forest, meets someone who says of him: "This venerable one, acting in such a way, of such conduct, is an impure thorn to the village." Having understood him thus as a "thorn," non-restraint (asaṃvara) and restraint (saṃvara) should be understood.
