[352] Bhikkhus, once in the past a battle between the devas (deva) and the asuras (asura) was massed in array. Then, bhikkhus, Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, addressed the asuras: "Dear sirs (mārisā), if, when the battle between the devas and the asuras is massed in array, the asuras should win and the devas should be defeated, then bind Sakka, lord of the devas, with the fivefold bonds, the neck being the fifth (kaṇṭhapañcamehi bandhanehi), and bring him to me in the city of the asuras." And Sakka, lord of the devas, addressed the Tāvatiṃsa devas: "Dear sirs, if, when the battle between the devas and the asuras is massed in array, the devas should win and the asuras should be defeated, then bind Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, with the fivefold bonds, the neck being the fifth, and bring him to me in Sudhamma, the assembly hall of the devas." And in that battle, bhikkhus, the devas won.
