[353] And there, bhikkhus, Vepacitti, lord of the asuras (asurinda), was bound by the fivefold bonds with the neck as the fifth (kaṇṭhapañcamehi bandhanehi). And when, bhikkhus, it occurs to Vepacitti, lord of the asuras: "The devas are righteous; the asuras are unrighteous. Now I shall go to the city of the devas," then he regards himself as freed from the fivefold bonds with the neck as the fifth, and, supplied and endowed with the five divine cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa), he amuses himself with them. But when, bhikkhus, it occurs to Vepacitti, lord of the asuras: "The asuras are righteous; the devas are unrighteous. Now I shall go right there to the city of the asuras," then he regards himself as bound by the fivefold bonds with the neck as the fifth, and he is deprived of the five divine cords of sensual pleasure. So subtle, bhikkhus, is the bondage of Vepacitti; but subtler still than that is the bondage of Māra. Conceiving, bhikkhus, one is bound by Māra; not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One (pāpimant).
