[377] Bhikkhus, if, while that bhikkhu dwells thus mindful (sati), clearly comprehending (sampajāno), heedful, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute, there arises a pleasant feeling (vedanā), he understands thus: 'There has arisen in me this pleasant feeling. Now that has arisen dependently, not independently. Dependent on what? Dependent on this very body. But this body is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen. So when a pleasant feeling has arisen dependent on a body that is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, how could it be permanent?' He dwells contemplating impermanence in the body and in pleasant feeling; he dwells contemplating vanishing; he dwells contemplating fading away; he dwells contemplating cessation (nirodha); he dwells contemplating relinquishment. As he dwells contemplating impermanence in the body and in pleasant feeling, as he dwells contemplating vanishing … as he dwells contemplating relinquishment, the underlying tendency to lust in regard to the body and to pleasant feeling is abandoned.
