[378] Bhikkhus, if, while that bhikkhu dwells thus mindful, clearly comprehending, heedful, ardent, and resolute, there arises in him a painful feeling (vedanā), he understands thus: 'This painful feeling has arisen in me. It is dependent, not independent. Dependent on what? Dependent on this very body. But this body is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen (paṭiccasamuppanna). When a painful feeling has arisen in dependence on a body that is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, how could it be permanent?' He dwells contemplating impermanence in the body and in painful feeling, he dwells contemplating vanishing, he dwells contemplating fading away, he dwells contemplating cessation, he dwells contemplating relinquishment. As he dwells contemplating impermanence in the body and in painful feeling … as he dwells contemplating relinquishment, the underlying tendency to aversion (paṭighānusaya) in regard to the body and to painful feeling is abandoned.
