[409] Then Pañcakaṅga the carpenter (thapati) approached the Venerable Udāyi; having approached, he paid homage to the Venerable Udāyi and sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, Pañcakaṅga the carpenter said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "Venerable Udāyi, how many feelings (vedanā) have been declared by the Blessed One?"
"Three feelings, householder, have been declared by the Blessed One: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. These, householder, are the three feelings declared by the Blessed One."
