[408] Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Blessed One; having approached … When those bhikkhus were seated to one side, the Blessed One said this to them: "Bhikkhus, what now is feeling (vedanā)? What is the origin of feeling? What is the cessation of feeling? What is the way of practice leading to the cessation of feeling? What is the gratification (assāda) in feeling? What is the danger (ādīnava) in feeling? What is the escape (nissaraṇa) from feeling?"
"Venerable sir, our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One …"
"Bhikkhus, there are these three feelings: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. These, bhikkhus, are called feeling. With the origin of contact (phassa) … (this should be expanded in detail just as the preceding sutta was expanded)."
