[411] The Venerable Ānanda heard this conversation between the Venerable Udāyi and Pañcakaṅga the carpenter. Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Ānanda reported to the Blessed One all of the conversation, as far as it had gone, between the Venerable Udāyi and Pañcakaṅga the carpenter. [The Blessed One said:] "Ānanda, it was indeed an existing method of exposition (pariyāya) that Pañcakaṅga the carpenter did not approve of from the bhikkhu Udāyi; and, Ānanda, it was indeed an existing method of exposition that the bhikkhu Udāyi did not approve of from Pañcakaṅga the carpenter."
