[498] "'Arahantship, arahantship (arahatta),' friend Sāriputta, it is said. What now, friend, is arahantship?"
"The destruction of lust (rāgakkhaya), the destruction of hatred (dosakkhaya), the destruction of delusion (mohakkhaya) — this, friend, is called arahantship."
"But is there, friend, a path (magga), is there a way of practice (paṭipadā), for the realization (sacchikiriyā) of this arahantship?"
"There is, friend, a path; there is a way of practice for the realization of this arahantship."
"But what, friend, is the path, what is the way of practice, for the realization of this arahantship?"
"It is just this Noble Eightfold Path (ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo), friend, for the realization of this arahantship; that is: right view … right concentration (samādhi). This, friend, is the path; this is the way of practice for the realization of this arahantship."
"Excellent, friend, is the path; excellent is the way of practice for the realization of this arahantship — and it is enough, friend Sāriputta, for diligence."
