[499] "Who, friend Sāriputta, are the speakers of Dhamma (dhammavādino) in the world? Who in the world are practicing well? Who in the world have fared well (sugatā)?"
"Friend, those who teach the Dhamma for the abandoning of lust (rāga), who teach the Dhamma for the abandoning of hatred, who teach the Dhamma for the abandoning of delusion — they are the speakers of Dhamma in the world. Those, friend, who are practicing for the abandoning of lust, practicing for the abandoning of hatred, practicing for the abandoning of delusion — they are practicing well in the world. Those, friend, for whom lust has been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, no longer subject to future arising; for whom hatred has been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, no longer subject to future arising; for whom delusion has been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, no longer subject to future arising — they have fared well in the world."
"But, friend, is there a path, is there a way of practice (paṭipadā), for the abandoning of that lust, that hatred, that delusion?"
"There is, friend, a path, there is a way of practice, for the abandoning of that lust, that hatred, that delusion."
"And what, friend, is the path, what is the way of practice, for the abandoning of that lust, that hatred, that delusion?"
"It is just this Noble Eightfold Path (magga), friend, for the abandoning of that lust, that hatred, that delusion; that is: right view … right concentration (samādhi). This, friend, is the path, this is the way of practice, for the abandoning of that lust, that hatred, that delusion."
"Excellent, friend, is the path, excellent the way of practice, for the abandoning of that lust, that hatred, that delusion — and enough, friend Sāriputta, for diligence (appamāda)."
