[504] "'Taint (āsava), taint,' friend Sāriputta, it is said. What now, friend, is a taint?"
"There are, friend, these three taints: the taint of sensuality (kāmāsava), the taint of existence (bhavāsava), and the taint of ignorance (avijjāsava). These, friend, are the three taints."
"But is there, friend, a path, is there a way of practice for the abandoning of these taints?"
"There is, friend, a path, there is a way of practice for the abandoning of these taints."
"But what, friend, is the path, what is the way of practice for the abandoning of these taints?"
"It is just this Noble Eightfold Path, friend, for the abandoning of these taints; that is: right view … right concentration (samādhi). This, friend, is the path, this is the way of practice for the abandoning of these taints."
"Excellent, friend, is the path, excellent the way of practice for the abandoning of these taints; and it is enough, friend Sāriputta, for diligence."
