[505] "'Ignorance, ignorance (avijjā),' friend Sāriputta, it is said. What now, friend, is ignorance?"
"That which is lack of knowledge (aññāṇa) regarding suffering (dukkha), friend, lack of knowledge regarding the origin of suffering, lack of knowledge regarding the cessation of suffering, lack of knowledge regarding the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering — this, friend, is called ignorance."
"But is there, friend, a path, is there a way of practice, for the abandoning of this ignorance?"
"There is, friend, a path; there is a way of practice for the abandoning of this ignorance."
"And what, friend, is the path, what is the way of practice, for the abandoning of this ignorance?"
"It is just this Noble Eightfold Path (magga), friend, for the abandoning of this ignorance; that is: right view … right concentration (samādhi). This, friend, is the path; this is the way of practice for the abandoning of this ignorance."
"Excellent, friend, is the path; excellent is the way of practice for the abandoning of this ignorance — and enough, friend Sāriputta, for diligence."
