[508] "'Clinging, clinging (upādāna),' friend Sāriputta, it is said. What now, friend, is clinging?"
"There are, friend, these four kinds of clinging: clinging to sensual pleasures (kāmupādāna), clinging to views (diṭṭhupādāna), clinging to rules and observances (sīlabbatupādāna), and clinging to a doctrine of self (attavādupādāna). These, friend, are the four kinds of clinging."
"But is there, friend, a path, is there a way of practice for the abandoning of these kinds of clinging?"
"There is, friend, a path, there is a way of practice for the abandoning of these kinds of clinging."
"And what, friend, is the path, what is the way of practice for the abandoning of these kinds of clinging?"
"It is just this Noble Eightfold Path, friend, for the abandoning of these kinds of clinging; that is: right view … right concentration (samādhi). This, friend, is the path, this is the way of practice for the abandoning of these kinds of clinging."
"Excellent, friend, is the path, excellent the way of practice, for the abandoning of these kinds of clinging; and it is enough, friend Sāriputta, for diligence."
