[537] On one occasion a number of elder bhikkhus were dwelling at Macchikāsaṇḍa, in the Ambāṭaka Grove. Now on that occasion, when the number of elder bhikkhus had returned from the alms round after the meal and were sitting assembled together in the pavilion, this conversation arose among them: "Friends, 'the fetter' (saṃyojana) and 'things that fetter' (saṃyojaniyā dhammā) — are these things different in meaning and different in phrasing, or are they one in meaning and different only in phrasing?"
Thereupon some elder bhikkhus answered thus: "Friends, 'the fetter' and 'things that fetter' — these things are different in meaning and also different in phrasing." But some elder bhikkhus answered thus: "Friends, 'the fetter' and 'things that fetter' — these things are one in meaning and different only in phrasing."
