[560] On one occasion the Venerable Kāmabhū was dwelling at Macchikāsaṇḍa, in the Ambāṭaka Grove. Then Citta the householder approached the Venerable Kāmabhū; having approached, he paid homage to the Venerable Kāmabhū and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Citta the householder said this to the Venerable Kāmabhū: "Venerable sir, how many formations (saṅkhārā) are there?"
"There are three formations, householder: the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra), the verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra), and the mental formation (cittasaṅkhāra)."
