[577] Now on that occasion the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta had arrived at Macchikāsaṇḍa together with a large assembly of Nigaṇṭhas. Citta the householder heard: "It is said that the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta has arrived at Macchikāsaṇḍa together with a large assembly of Nigaṇṭhas." Then Citta the householder, together with a number of lay followers (upāsaka), approached the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta, and when the courteous talk of friendly greetings was concluded, he sat down to one side. As Citta the householder sat to one side, the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta said this to him: "Householder, do you have faith (saddhā) in the ascetic Gotama that there is a concentration (samādhi) without thought (vitakka) and without examination (vicāra), that there is a cessation of thought and examination?"
"Venerable sir, in this matter I do not go by faith in the Blessed One that there is a concentration without thought and without examination, that there is a cessation of thought and examination."
