[576] "And what, venerable sir, is the method of exposition (pariyāya) by reason of which these things are one in meaning and different only in phrasing? Lust (rāga), venerable sir, is a maker of measurement, hatred is a maker of measurement, delusion is a maker of measurement. For a bhikkhu whose taints (āsava) are destroyed, these have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, so that they are of a nature not to arise again in the future. Venerable sir, as far as the measureless liberations of mind (cetovimutti) extend, the unshakable liberation of mind is declared the foremost among them. And that unshakable liberation of mind is empty of lust, empty of hatred, empty of delusion.
"Lust, venerable sir, is a something (kiñcana), hatred is a something, delusion is a something. For a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed, these have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, so that they are of a nature not to arise again in the future. Venerable sir, as far as the liberations of mind by nothingness extend, the unshakable liberation of mind is declared the foremost among them. And that unshakable liberation of mind is empty of lust, empty of hatred, empty of delusion.
"Lust, venerable sir, is a maker of signs (nimitta), hatred is a maker of signs, delusion is a maker of signs. For a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed, these have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, so that they are of a nature not to arise again in the future. Venerable sir, as far as the signless liberations of mind extend, the unshakable liberation of mind is declared the foremost among them. And that unshakable liberation of mind is empty of lust, empty of hatred, empty of delusion.
"This, venerable sir, is the method of exposition by reason of which these things are one in meaning and different only in phrasing."
