[586] Then Caṇḍa the headman approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Caṇḍa the headman said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the reason, why some person here is reckoned as fierce, 'a fierce one'? And what, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, why some person here is reckoned as gentle, 'a gentle one'?"
"Here, headman, in some person lust (rāga) is unabandoned. Because lust is unabandoned, others provoke him to anger; being provoked to anger by others, he displays anger. He is reckoned as 'a fierce one.' Hatred is unabandoned in him. Because hatred is unabandoned, others provoke him to anger; being provoked to anger by others, he displays anger. He is reckoned as 'a fierce one.' Delusion is unabandoned in him. Because delusion is unabandoned, others provoke him to anger; being provoked to anger by others, he displays anger. He is reckoned as 'a fierce one.' This, headman, is the cause, this is the reason, why some person here is reckoned as fierce, 'a fierce one.'"
