[593] Then Yodhājīva the headman approached the Blessed One; having approached … Seated to one side, Yodhājīva the headman said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I have heard this said by professional warriors of old, teachers and teachers of teachers: 'When a professional warrior strives and exerts himself in battle, and others slay him and finish him off while he is thus striving and exerting himself, then with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the Sarajita devas.' What does the Blessed One say about this?"
"Enough, headman, let that be. Do not ask me that."
A second time … A third time Yodhājīva the headman said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I have heard this said by professional warriors of old, teachers and teachers of teachers: 'When a professional warrior strives and exerts himself in battle, and others slay him and finish him off while he is thus striving and exerting himself, then with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the Sarajita devas.' What does the Blessed One say about this?"
"Clearly, headman, I have not succeeded in dissuading you when I said, 'Enough, headman, let that be; do not ask me that.' Nevertheless, I shall answer you. Headman, when a professional warrior strives and exerts himself in battle, his mind (citta) has already beforehand been seized, ill-conducted, and wrongly directed thus: 'Let these beings be slain, or be slaughtered, or be annihilated, or be destroyed, or let them not exist!' Then, while he is thus striving and exerting himself, others slay him and finish him off; and with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn there in the hell named Sarajita. But if he holds such a view as this: 'When a professional warrior strives and exerts himself in battle, and others slay him and finish him off while he is thus striving and exerting himself, then with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the Sarajita devas' — that is wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi) on his part. And for a person of wrong view, headman, I declare one of two destinations: hell or the animal womb."
