[594] When this was said, the headman (gāmaṇi) who was a professional warrior (yodhājīva) burst into tears and wept. [The Blessed One said:] "This, headman, is just what I could not get from you when I said: 'Enough, headman, let this be; do not ask me that.'"
"Venerable sir, I am not weeping over what the Blessed One has said to me. Rather, venerable sir, for a long time I have been tricked, deceived, and beguiled by professional warriors of old, teachers and teachers of teachers, who said: 'When a professional warrior strives and exerts himself in battle, and others slay him and finish him off while he is thus striving and exerting himself, then, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the Sarajita devas.'
"Magnificent, venerable sir! Magnificent, venerable sir! … From this day forth, [may the Blessed One remember me as one] who has gone for refuge for life."
