[87] "Bhikkhus, whatever bhikkhu does not understand as it really is the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to the six bases of contact (phassāyatana) — the holy life (brahmacariya) has not been lived by him; he is far from this Dhamma and Discipline."
When this was said, a certain bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, I am lost; for I, venerable sir, do not understand as it really is the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to the six bases of contact."
"What do you think, bhikkhu — is the eye permanent or impermanent?" — "Impermanent, venerable sir." — "And is what is impermanent suffering (dukkha) or happiness?" — "Suffering, venerable sir." — "And is what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change fit to be regarded thus: 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'?" — "No indeed, venerable sir."
"Is the ear ... the nose ... the tongue ... the body ... the mind permanent or impermanent?" — "Impermanent, venerable sir." — "And is what is impermanent suffering or happiness?" — "Suffering, venerable sir." — "And is what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change fit to be regarded thus: 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'?" — "No indeed, venerable sir."
"Seeing thus, bhikkhu, the instructed noble disciple becomes disenchanted with the eye, disenchanted with the ear, with the nose, with the tongue, with the body, with the mind. Being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate; through dispassion he is liberated. When it is liberated, there comes the knowledge (ñāṇa): 'It is liberated.' He understands: 'Birth (jāti) is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being.'"
