[86] "Bhikkhus, whatever bhikkhu does not understand as it really is the origin and the passing away (atthaṅgama), the gratification (assāda), the danger (ādīnava), and the escape (nissaraṇa) in the case of the six bases for contact (phassāyatana) — the holy life (brahmacariya) has not been lived to completion by him; he is far from this Dhamma and Discipline."
When this was said, a certain bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, I am lost; for I, venerable sir, do not understand as it really is the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of the six bases for contact."
"What do you think, bhikkhu? Do you regard the eye thus: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self'?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"Good, bhikkhu. And here, bhikkhu, the eye will have been well seen by you with right wisdom (sammappaññā) as it really is thus: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self.' In this way this first base for contact will have been abandoned by you, so that there is no renewed occurrence of it in the future. … Do you regard the tongue thus: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self'?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"Good, bhikkhu. And here, bhikkhu, the tongue will have been well seen by you with right wisdom as it really is thus: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self.' In this way this fourth base for contact will have been abandoned by you, so that there is no renewed occurrence of it in the future. … Do you regard the mind (mano) thus: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self'?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"Good, bhikkhu. And here, bhikkhu, the mind will have been well seen by you with right wisdom as it really is thus: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self.' In this way this sixth base for contact will have been abandoned by you, so that there is no renewed occurrence of it in the future."
