[98] Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One … Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "'The world, the world,' it is said, venerable sir. In what way, venerable sir, is it called 'the world'?"
"It disintegrates, bhikkhu; therefore it is called 'the world.' And what disintegrates? The eye, bhikkhu, disintegrates, forms disintegrate, eye-consciousness disintegrates, eye-contact disintegrates, and whatever feeling (vedanā) arises with eye-contact as condition—whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant—that too disintegrates. … The tongue disintegrates … The mind (mano) disintegrates, dhammas disintegrate, mind-consciousness disintegrates, mind-contact disintegrates, and whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition—whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant—that too disintegrates. It is disintegrating, bhikkhu; therefore it is called 'the world.'"
