[1038] Bhikkhus, just as the footprints of whatever living creatures walk upon the land all fit within the footprint of the elephant, and the elephant's footprint is declared the foremost among them, that is, by reason of its great size — even so, bhikkhus, whatever steps lead to awakening, the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya) is declared the foremost among those steps, that is, in leading to awakening.
