[1069] Bhikkhus, there are these five faculties (indriya). What five? The faculty of faith (saddhindriya) … the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya). These, bhikkhus, are the five faculties. Because these five faculties have been developed and cultivated, bhikkhus, seven fruits and seven benefits may be expected. What are the seven fruits and seven benefits? One attains final knowledge (aññā) early in this very life. If one does not attain final knowledge early in this very life, then one attains final knowledge at the time of death. If one does not attain final knowledge early in this very life, and does not attain final knowledge at the time of death, then with the utter destruction of the five lower fetters (saṃyojana) one becomes an attainer of Nibbāna in the interval; one becomes an attainer of Nibbāna upon landing; one becomes an attainer of Nibbāna without exertion; one becomes an attainer of Nibbāna with exertion; one becomes one bound upstream, heading to the Akaniṭṭha realm. Because these five faculties have been developed and cultivated, bhikkhus, these seven fruits and seven benefits may be expected.
