[1090] At Sāvatthī. There the Blessed One … said this:
"Bhikkhus, there are these four right strivings (sammappadhāna). What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda) for the non-arising of unarisen evil, unwholesome states; he makes an effort, arouses energy (vīriya), exerts the mind (citta), and strives. He generates desire for the abandoning of arisen evil, unwholesome states; he makes an effort, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. He generates desire for the arising of unarisen wholesome states; he makes an effort, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. He generates desire for the persistence, non-decline, increase, expansion, development, and fulfillment of arisen wholesome states; he makes an effort, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. These, bhikkhus, are the four right strivings."
