[1089] Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge (abhiññā), for the full understanding (pariññā), for the complete destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters (uddhambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni), the five faculties (indriya) are to be developed. Which five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the faculty of faith (saddhindriya), which has the removal of lust as its culmination, the removal of hatred as its culmination, the removal of delusion as its culmination; he develops the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration (samādhi), the faculty of wisdom, which has the removal of lust as its culmination, the removal of hatred as its culmination, the removal of delusion as its culmination. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge, for the full understanding, for the complete destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters, these five faculties are to be developed.
