[1092] And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, developing the four right strivings (sammappadhāna), cultivating the four right strivings, become one who slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind (citta), and strives for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen. He generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have arisen. He generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the arising of wholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen. He generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the maintenance, non-decline, increase, expansion, development, and fulfillment of wholesome dhammas that have arisen. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, developing the four right strivings, cultivating the four right strivings, becomes one who slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna.
Six on slanting to the east, and six on slanting to the ocean;
These two sixes make up twelve — hence this is called a chapter.
