[1094] "And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, relying on virtue (sīla), established in virtue, develop the four right strivings (sammappadhāna) and cultivate the four right strivings? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda), strives, arouses energy (vīriya), applies his mind (citta), and exerts himself for the non-arising of unarisen evil, unwholesome dhammas … he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, applies his mind, and exerts himself for the persistence, non-decline, increase, expansion, development, and fulfilment of arisen wholesome dhammas. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develops the four right strivings and cultivates the four right strivings." (Thus the Balakaraṇīya Vagga should be expanded by way of the right strivings.)
