[1129] Then Māra the Evil One, (not long after the Venerable Ānanda had departed,) approached the Blessed One; and having approached, (he stood to one side. Standing to one side, Māra the Evil One) said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, let the Blessed One now attain final Nibbāna (parinibbāna); let the Sugata attain final Nibbāna; now, venerable sir, is the time for the Blessed One's final Nibbāna. For this statement, venerable sir, was spoken by the Blessed One: 'I shall not attain final Nibbāna, Evil One, so long as my bhikkhus have not become disciples who are competent, disciplined, confident, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practicing in accordance with the Dhamma, practicing rightly, conducting themselves in conformity with the Dhamma; who, having learned their own teacher's doctrine, will announce it, teach it, make it known, establish it, disclose it, analyze it, and elucidate it; and who, when the doctrine of another has arisen, will refute it thoroughly with legitimate reason (sahadhamma) and teach the Dhamma with its wonders (sappāṭihāriya).' But now, venerable sir, there are bhikkhus, disciples of the Blessed One, who are competent, disciplined, confident, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practicing in accordance with the Dhamma, practicing rightly, conducting themselves in conformity with the Dhamma; who, having learned their own teacher's doctrine, announce it, teach it, make it known, establish it, disclose it, analyze it, and elucidate it; and who, when the doctrine of another has arisen, refute it thoroughly with legitimate reason and teach the Dhamma with its wonders.
