[130] Then, not long after the Venerable Ānanda had departed, Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One; having approached, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, Māra the Evil One said this to the Blessed One:
"Venerable sir, let the Blessed One now attain final Nibbāna (parinibbāna); let the Well-Farer (sugata) attain final Nibbāna. Now, venerable sir, is the time for the Blessed One's final Nibbāna. Moreover, venerable sir, these words were spoken by the Blessed One: 'Evil One, I shall not attain final Nibbāna so long as my bhikkhus have not become disciples (sāvaka) who are competent, trained, attained to confidence, desiring security from bondage (yogakkhema), learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, practising properly, conducting themselves in conformity with the Dhamma — who, having learned their own teacher's doctrine, will announce it, teach it, proclaim it, establish it, disclose it, analyze it, and elucidate it, and who, having thoroughly refuted with legitimate reason the doctrines of others (parappavāda) that have arisen, will teach the Dhamma with its marvels (sappāṭihāriya).' But now, venerable sir, the bhikkhus, disciples of the Blessed One, are competent, trained, attained to confidence, desiring security from bondage, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, practising properly, conducting themselves in conformity with the Dhamma; having learned their own teacher's doctrine, they announce it, teach it, proclaim it, establish it, disclose it, analyze it, and elucidate it; having thoroughly refuted with legitimate reason the doctrines of others that have arisen, they teach the Dhamma with its marvels. Venerable sir, let the Blessed One now attain final Nibbāna; let the Well-Farer attain final Nibbāna. Now, venerable sir, is the time for the Blessed One's final Nibbāna.

But now, venerable sir, the male lay followers, disciples of the Blessed One, are competent, trained, attained to confidence, desiring security from bondage, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, practising properly, conducting themselves in conformity with the Dhamma; having learned their own teacher's doctrine, they announce it, teach it, proclaim it, establish it, disclose it, analyze it, and elucidate it; having thoroughly refuted with legitimate reason the doctrines of others that have arisen, they teach the Dhamma with its marvels. Venerable sir, let the Blessed One now attain final Nibbāna; let the Well-Farer attain final Nibbāna. Now, venerable sir, is the time for the Blessed One's final Nibbāna.

But now, venerable sir, the female lay followers, women disciples of the Blessed One, are competent, trained, attained to confidence, desiring security from bondage, bearers of the Dhamma, learned, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, practising properly, conducting themselves in conformity with the Dhamma; having learned their own teacher's doctrine, they announce it, teach it, proclaim it, establish it, disclose it, analyze it, and elucidate it; having thoroughly refuted with legitimate reason the doctrines of others that have arisen, they teach the Dhamma with its marvels. Venerable sir, let the Blessed One now attain final Nibbāna; let the Well-Farer attain final Nibbāna. Now, venerable sir, is the time for the Blessed One's final Nibbāna.
"Moreover, venerable sir, these words were spoken by the Blessed One: 'Evil One, I shall not attain final Nibbāna so long as this holy life (brahmacariya) of mine has not become successful and prosperous, extensive, known to many, widespread — until it is well proclaimed among devas and human beings.' But now, venerable sir, the Blessed One's holy life is successful and prosperous, extensive, known to many, widespread, well proclaimed among devas and human beings. Venerable sir, let the Blessed One now attain final Nibbāna; let the Well-Farer attain final Nibbāna. Now, venerable sir, is the time for the Blessed One's final Nibbāna."
