Gillānasutta

[1284] "Friends, as I dwell with a mind well established in the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), arisen painful bodily feelings (vedanā) do not persist overwhelming the mind (citta). In which four? Here, friends, I dwell contemplating the body in the body … in feelings … in the mind … I dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas — ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. Friends, as I dwell with a mind well established in these four establishments of mindfulness, arisen painful bodily feelings do not persist overwhelming the mind." The Rahogata Chapter, the first. Its summary (uddāna): Two spoken in seclusion (rahogata); Sutanu; the three Kaṇṭakī; Taṇhakkhaya, Salaḷāgāra, Ambapāli, and Gilāyana.¹ ______________ ¹ Variant readings: M(yanmar) reads "Ambapāli ca gilānan'ti"; Yu(ropean) reads throughout "bāḷhagilāyanan'ti."
