[1512] "Suppose, Mahānāma, there were a tree slanting toward the east, sloping toward the east, inclining toward the east. If it were cut at the root, in which direction would it fall?" "In whichever direction it slants, venerable sir, in whichever direction it slopes, in whichever direction it inclines." "Even so, Mahānāma, a noble disciple who possesses these four qualities slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna."
