[1529] "Mahānāma, when a lay follower (upāsaka) has for a long time gone to the Buddha for refuge (saraṇa), gone to the Dhamma for refuge, gone to the Saṅgha for refuge, how could he go to the lower world (vinipāta)? For if, Mahānāma, one speaking rightly should say of anyone, 'He was a lay follower who for a long time had gone to the Buddha for refuge, gone to the Dhamma for refuge, gone to the Saṅgha for refuge,' it is of Sarakāni the Sakyan that one, speaking rightly, would say it: Sarakāni the Sakyan, Mahānāma, was a lay follower who for a long time had gone to the Buddha for refuge, gone to the Dhamma for refuge, gone to the Saṅgha for refuge. How could he go to the lower world?"
