[1528] Then Mahānāma the Sakyan approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Mahānāma the Sakyan said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, here Sarakāni the Sakyan has died, and he was declared by the Blessed One to be a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the states of deprivation, fixed in destiny, with awakening (sambodhi) as his final goal. Thereupon, venerable sir, a number of Sakyans, having gathered and assembled, deplore, criticize, and complain: 'It is astonishing indeed, sirs! It is marvellous indeed, sirs! Now who here will not be a stream-enterer, when Sarakāni the Sakyan, who has died, was declared by the Blessed One to be a stream-enterer, no longer subject to the states of deprivation, fixed in destiny, with awakening as his final goal? Sarakāni the Sakyan fell into weakness in the training; he drank intoxicating drink!'"
