[1538] Then Mahānāma the Sakyan approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Mahānāma the Sakyan said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, here Sarakāni the Sakyan has died, and he was declared by the Blessed One to be a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the lower realms (avinipātadhamma), fixed in destiny (niyata), bound for awakening (sambodhiparāyana). Thereupon, venerable sir, a number of Sakyans, having gathered and assembled together, deplore, criticize, and complain: 'It is astonishing indeed, sirs! It is marvellous indeed, sirs! Now who here will not be a stream-enterer, when Sarakāni the Sakyan, who has died, was declared by the Blessed One to be a stream-enterer, no longer subject to the lower realms, fixed in destiny, bound for awakening? Sarakāni the Sakyan did not fulfil the training!'"
