[1537] Setting at Kapilavatthu. Now on that occasion Sarakāni the Sakyan had died, and the Blessed One had declared of him: "He was a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to the lower worlds, fixed in destiny, bound for awakening." Thereupon a number of Sakyans, having gathered and assembled, deplored, criticized, and complained: "It is astonishing indeed, sirs! It is amazing indeed, sirs! Now who here will not be a stream-enterer, seeing that Sarakāni the Sakyan, who has died, has been declared by the Blessed One thus: 'He was a stream-enterer, no longer subject to the lower worlds, fixed in destiny, bound for awakening'? Sarakāni the Sakyan was one who did not fulfil the training (sikkhā)!"
