[1527] The setting is Kapilavatthu. Now on that occasion Sarakāni the Sakyan had died, and the Blessed One had declared of him: "He is a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), no longer subject to states of loss (avinipātadhamma), fixed in destiny, with awakening as his destination." Thereupon a number of Sakyans, having gathered and assembled, deplored it, grumbled, and spread it about, saying: "It is astonishing indeed, sirs! It is amazing indeed, sirs! Now who here will not be a stream-enterer? For Sarakāni the Sakyan has died, and the Blessed One has declared of him: 'He is a stream-enterer, no longer subject to states of loss, fixed in destiny, with awakening as his destination.' Yet Sarakāni the Sakyan fell into weakness in the training (sikkhā); he drank intoxicating drink!"
