[1588] Bhikkhus, there are these four footprints of the devas (devapada), for the purification of beings who are impure and for the cleansing of beings who are uncleansed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha thus: "For this reason too that Blessed One is … the Teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One." He reflects thus: "What now is the footprint of the devas?" He understands thus: "I hear that at present the devas hold non-affliction (abyāpajjha) as supreme; and I do not afflict anyone, frail or firm. Surely I dwell possessed of the quality that is a footprint of the devas." This is the first footprint of the devas, for the purification of beings who are impure and for the cleansing of beings who are uncleansed.
Furthermore, bhikkhus, a noble disciple … in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha … possesses the virtues dear to the noble ones—unbroken … conducive to concentration (samādhi). He reflects thus: "What now is the footprint of the devas?" He understands thus: "I hear that at present the devas hold non-affliction as supreme; and I do not afflict anyone, frail or firm. Surely I dwell possessed of the quality that is a footprint of the devas." This is the fourth footprint of the devas, for the purification of beings who are impure and for the cleansing of beings who are uncleansed.
