[1589] Bhikkhus, the devas, elated, having gathered in assembly, speak of one who possesses four qualities (dhammā). Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple possesses confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha thus: "That Blessed One is indeed … the teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One." Those deities who possessed confirmed confidence in the Buddha and who, passing away from here, were reborn there, think thus: "Just as we possessed confirmed confidence in the Buddha of such a kind and, passing away from there, were reborn here, so too a noble disciple who possesses confirmed confidence in the Buddha of the same kind will come into the presence of the devas — 'Come!'"
Furthermore, bhikkhus, a noble disciple … in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha …. He possesses the virtues dear to the noble ones (ariyakantāni sīlāni) — unbroken … conducive to concentration (samādhi). Those deities who possessed the virtues dear to the noble ones and who, passing away from here, were reborn there, think thus: "Just as we possessed virtues dear to the noble ones of such a kind and, passing away from there, were reborn here, so too a noble disciple who possesses virtues dear to the noble ones of the same kind will come into the presence of the devas — 'Come!'"
Bhikkhus, the devas, elated, having gathered in assembly, speak of one who possesses these four qualities.
