[1602] And how, Nandiya, is a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) one who dwells in diligence (appamāda)? Here, Nandiya, a noble disciple is endowed with unwavering confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha: "Thus indeed is that Blessed One … teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One." Not content with that unwavering confidence in the Buddha, he strives further — for seclusion by day and for retreat by night. As he dwells thus diligent, gladness (pāmojja) is born; in one who is gladdened, rapture is born; in one whose mind is filled with rapture, the body becomes tranquil; one whose body is tranquil feels pleasure; the mind (citta) of one who is happy becomes concentrated; when the mind is concentrated, dhammas become manifest. Because of the manifestation of dhammas, he is reckoned simply as "one who dwells in diligence."
Furthermore, Nandiya, a noble disciple [is endowed with unwavering confidence] in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha … He is endowed with the virtues dear to the noble ones — unbroken … conducive to concentration (samādhi). Not content with those virtues dear to the noble ones, he strives further — for seclusion by day and for retreat by night. As he dwells thus diligent, gladness is born; in one who is gladdened, rapture is born; in one whose mind is filled with rapture, the body becomes tranquil; one whose body is tranquil feels pleasure; the mind of one who is happy becomes concentrated; when the mind is concentrated, dhammas become manifest. Because of the manifestation of dhammas, he is reckoned simply as "one who dwells in diligence." It is in this way, Nandiya, that a noble disciple is one who dwells in diligence.
