[1694] Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "'Ignorance (avijjā), ignorance,' venerable sir, it is said. What now, venerable sir, is ignorance, and in what way has one come to ignorance?"
"Bhikkhu, the lack of knowledge (aññāṇa) regarding suffering (dukkha), the lack of knowledge regarding the origin of suffering, the lack of knowledge regarding the cessation of suffering, the lack of knowledge regarding the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering — this, bhikkhu, is called ignorance, and in this way one has come to ignorance. Therefore, bhikkhu, effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is suffering' … effort should be made [to understand]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'"
