[1695] Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said, 'true knowledge (vijjā), true knowledge.' What now, venerable sir, is true knowledge, and in what way has one arrived at true knowledge?"
"Bhikkhu, the knowledge (ñāṇa) of suffering (dukkha), the knowledge of the origin of suffering, the knowledge of the cessation of suffering, the knowledge of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering — this, bhikkhu, is called true knowledge, and to this extent one has arrived at true knowledge. Therefore, bhikkhu, effort should be made [to realize]: 'This is suffering' … effort should be made [to realize]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'"
